The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen Vol 2, Issue 4: Daredevil We're back into the superhero issues of the League, this time taking a look at ol' Matt Murdoch. Joining us for the ride and for some discussions about the Austin Indie Comics Con called Staple!, taking place Saturday March 7th, is show runner Chris Nicholas and old school comic critic and the gracious owner of Rogue's Gallery Comics and Games, Randy Lander, who seriously needs to stop being so strict about his RPG nights. Muchos gracias goes out to League Lounge members Jagr and Ghostwriter who helped me put together a nice surprise for the League members this episode.

One more: UFO Robo Grendizer, this anime started the whole Anime invasion in the Arabic part of the Middle East during the 80s and 90's, it was also released in the US under the name Grandizer as part of the multi-anime mecha show Force Five, where only 26 out of the 74 episodes were dubbed in English.

I heard about the upcoming version, I'm so hyped up for it. We had 2 Arabic dubs of Yamato/Star Blazers, the first being done between the 70's or 80's was a translation of the US dub with the US names but according to the information was more faithful to the Japanese version. The second was done in the 90's with the characters given Arabic names.

Ok, according to IMDB, the first three season's aired in the US. IMDB also has a listing for a 2010 version of Star Blazers: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800218/ Anyone know anything about that? Not really any info there...

Hell, I LOVED the StarBlazers growing up. I actually just watched all the Space Battleship Yamato (What they call it in Japan) Movies on NetFlix over the X-box 360 about a month ago. They actually still hold up. Only the first two ever aired in the US as far as I know, as I had never seen the stories in the last three movies. The last one's a bummer though as the ship gets blown to bits.... LONG LIVE THE LEAGUE!!!

Giant Robo: This classic 90's OVA is made of pure Epicness that many new anime titles have yet to even match.

    Who can forget Gigantor?

She-Hulk could support a movie on her own.

Oh mighty LEOG my question is. With the Watchmen movie being okay in representing the comic, how would you feel if Watchmen was made into something like a mini-series where they could spend 1/2 hr to an hour detailing parts of the comic each week. Taking their time in explaining the story with small breaks into the side stories like hollis' behind the mask and the mariner story. If this was ever done who would you see as playing the parts of the characters

    Anybody remember Star Blazers?

  • March 10, 2009 at 11:37 PM, B.Bally said ...

@Leon: Well, it was done in the 80's, 1985 to be exact so technically it can be considered "old school" now, or so I hear from other anime fans.

Ahh yes. The 8th man. That takes me back. But I remember a little animated flick I caught back in the day at the local nickelodian theatre. Anyone else remember Fantasmagorie?

That's funny to me that you consider Robotech "old school". Anybody beside me remember the 8th Man?

About the old cartoons comment, I agree shows like Scooby Doo aren't as good as I remember it, however I seem to enjoy old Japanese cartoons or "anime" over the new ones, yes the new ones have better animation however old school anime had more likeble characters, better music and heart and soul. Anybody remember Robotech? It aired in the 90's however the anime Macross they used for the first season of the US adaptation was done in the 80's, I would take Robotech/Macross over Naruto (BLECH! Most Overrated Anime EVER!) anyday, hell I rather watch Samurai Pizza Cats over Naruto (the Pizza Cats are more ninja than the entire cast of Naruto). Also the animation from old anime titles have more movement from the characters than in new anime titles.

The Zatanna's pretty enough I just don't like what Smallville does to the characters.

Zatana's going to be on Smallville in a couple of weeks. And I can't believe I'm saying this, as a straight woman.... but the rack's not big enough...

The Liam Neeson movie with Julia Roberts was originally called "Satisfaction" but since it began playing on tv, the name was changed to "Girls of Summer."

The 2003 He-Man Series - friggin' awesome. I have the DVD's. Love them. I loved the original when I was a kid, but ya, I re-watch them now and they're toilet. Loved all of those cartoons - I was such a tomboy. ThunderCats, GI Joe, G-Force (no damn gerbils!!!), Transformers, Bravestar. (And speaking of Transformers, my cousin made a good point - Transformers Generation 1, can't be shown on tv anymore. Holy violence - the sensors head's would explode. Hell, the INTRO to the final season wouldn't get airplay.) And here ya go.... Ben Underwood - Half Aquaman, Half Daredevil.

The question about female comic book characters was specifically superheroes, not just any old comic character, ruling out most of the choices people have suggested.

Cyrus, I think Daredevil means it's about time that you did a podcast about Daredevil. I mean, you did do a podcast about Daredevil the superhero, not that you should do a podcast about Daredevil the Spill member, unless the person who posted named Daredevil claims to be Daredevil the superhero, then you also did do a post about the Spill member. Wait. What?
