Gonna have to disagree with you fine gentleman here, this is a Matinee for me. It slowed down in the middle but overall it was very good!

I was skeptical at first, but I was surprised on how good the movie actually was. Rental is too low, this deserves matinee.

i agree with this reviwe and the lil kid playing the bully was shit scary :S i think it was the eyes that did it lol, to me the old Karate Kid was so much better than this one, i like jackie chan i do but Pat Morita was so much better at playing the role in my opinion.

This movie was a Full Price for me, even though I thought it looked like crap from the trailers. I'm glad it's different from the original because times have changed, so what do people really expect? This movie was REALLY good, but I was surprised that it was over 2 hours long.

I gotta say Matinee thats because I am a fan of Jackie Chan and I love the Karate Kid Original, but this movie wasn't much of a remake cause everything was different like names and storyline, it was more like a Copy-Cat Movie of the original Karake Kid but don't get me wrong the movie was good, Jaden had some moves..by the way people stop hating on the Spill Crew these guys are awesome..add me as a friend people and check out my free movie site on my Spill Page

First of all, all you haters can get over yourselves. The Spill Crew is entitled to their opinions. Second, I think they should have kept the original title they were planning for this movie, "The Kung Fu Kid." It would have at least had a seperate identity to the original movie. It was still a good movie, though.

the 2 reasons i watched this was because of jackie chan, and how it is totally different from the original in terms of its construction...but it is still a good film, and still, full of many good things...

@ O'Ljubcic. Thanks, but I know Kung-Fu came from China and Karate is based in Japan. The point I was attempting to make is that for whatever reason the script was written for Mr. Miyagi to take the opportunity to state his Karate originated in China. The movie never mentioned if his father then added his own pesonal spin to make it a hybrid of the two, if it stayed Kung-Fu or if it became something else. That could have been for a number or reasons we'll never know. I was just making the comparison that it could be argued both movies, the 2010 version and the 1980s version are incorrectly named. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

@Jenn-Jenn Kung fu came originally from China. It was introduced to Japan sometime in history, and over the years people such as Gichin Funakoshi changed the form and style of kung fu to suit their own purposes; in this way did kung fu transform into karate. It's safe to assume that Mr. Miyagi's father, or whoever it was, brought kung fu from China and altered it into Miyagi-do karate. Daniel was practicing karate, while Dre was practicing kug fu.

I'm sorry guys, but i think this movie is at least a high matinee. I finally got around to watch it, and i'd admit, I was put off by the title for so long, but I did thoroughly enjoy it

Technically the original Karate Kid was missed name as well. I can't remember if it was mentioned in the first one, bub in the second Karate Kid when Mr. Miagi went to Japan with Daniel, he said his family's karate was brought back by his father from China which would have made it Kung Fu. Not saying that makes it right, just pointing out the original franchise had it wrong too.

@ Chris. You know the original title was the Kung Fu kid, but I guess they figured people would relate to the title Karate Kid due to the classic predecessors. Just a marketing thing.

Does no one understand the difference between Karate and Kung Fu...its Japan and China. Its like making a movie about quarter mile drag racing and having drifting in the entire movie, sure it involves cars but come on (no, thats not a shot at fast and the furious)...its two completely different styles of martial arts. How a movie called Karate Kid can use kung fu is beyond me, all they did is want to jump on a classic movie franchise and exploit the name to promote sales...Just call it the Kung Fu Kid or Wushu Kid For an example at the differences watch Jet Li's Fearless.

Hm, I'm gonna have to disagree with the crew on this review. Sure, there were elements that you really.... really had to suspend your disbelief. But mostly that was centered around Dre (Jaden Smith's character) learning what he needed in a month or so to defeat kids that have been training since they were... well kids. We all know some kids have the ability to absorb things like sponges, and there was a point in the movie when he was just starting his training that he stated he was on the gymnastics team, so it's not wholely unfathomable to think he could have incorporated parts of what he knew from that into the kung fu as K.Alston pointed out. They also showed him watching other kids doing it at the tournement. Adults would hesitate to try something new like that before practicing it, kids... not so much. We are talking about a generation where they'll watch a new dance in a video and ten minutes later do the same dance.

As for the region where all they are doing is different kung-fu moves... I don't know how realistic or non-realistic it is since I've never been to China, but my gut tells me it might not be too far fetched.

In all I found the movie enjoyable, it did seem a bit too long but that could also be, because I had a large coke and my bladder was grumbling about 20 mins before the end. The acting was enjoyable. There were times when Jaden's acting reminded me of his father, especially in the sequence when he first went to Mr. Han's home and was talking about what all he could already do... and broke the pot. But that's almost to be expected to an extent until he grows enough to develop his own style, and it didn't detract from the movie.

I don't give it a full price on the simple fact that its a remake. I think hollywood needs to go back to coming up with original movies and cease the remake, adaptation (comics, books, et al), tv series to movie madness. But I definitely give this movie a matinee. P.S. Nightmayor I agree with you 110%

Yeah... I'm reading the comments after watching this review and I see I'm not the only one going 'WTF? This movie was awesome'. I'm mean, so what if the movie overhighlighted Jaden Smith? His dad was the producer, dude. And sure he trained in like two weeks and got better than those 'child weapons of death'- I just assumed Mr. Han was awesome enough to pull something crazy like that. In my honest opinion, it deserves AT LEAST a full price. There are so many other things I could point out here too; listed by others here on the site, but I'm lazy.

just seen this last night, and i loved it! i really never comment on here but after whatching your review, then seeing this film i tottally disagree whith spills rating.it was a little too long but i really enjoyed the whole movie, this is full price for me! i have been whatching spills reviews for a long time now,and it does seem like they rather be funny than to give a good review.i dont mind them being funny when a movie is trash 90% of them are,but not this one.

Just had the chance to catch the movie a while ago, and I thought it was actually great. I can see where you had your concerns and all, but overall, this was actually a good movie, not just for the US, but especially with China as well, with the fact that you're dealing with a common situation of being out of place, trying to fit in and not be pushed around. This is definitely a solid Full Price for me.

This movie was awesome. And fellas... The reason he knew how to flip and be do agile was stated in the movie. He said he did some gymnastics with his uncle. Full price all the way!!!!!!

Funny how young Smith is the only young African American male that can get a none stereotypical role in hollywood.lol

  • June 22, 2010 at 7:52 PM, Nightmayor said ...

@Ebony I know it may sound retarded but believe me if you don't support it then the producer of this and other films will cop out and say. "See, films with African-Americans in the lead don't make money." Its the same mentality used to explan the lack of Black dramas. "Blacks prefer comedies to dramas. That's why we only make black sitcoms." Its a known fact that if a film does well more like it will be made. After Spider-man's success we have been overrun with superhero films. Harry Potter launched this current Magic Teen trend we are in. Last years teen black films were Precious and Blindside. Precious was just depressing for a whole. and Blindside was good but why that particular story? How many NFL players made it with black parents cheering them on? .We have to point out the single one with a loving white family. I don't know just seem to make me feel that blacks can't succeed without a white family to show them how. Peace

  • June 22, 2010 at 7:35 PM, Nightmayor said ...

@Method You know it is so easy for whites to say it doesn't matter the race of a character when your represented .99.9% of the F****** time. Other than Jaden can you even name another Africa-American staring in big budget film. Just for once picture everything reversed. Every teen film with Blacks in place of Whites. From Harry Potter to Kick Ass, Percy Jackson to Twilight. Then do an honest soul search and ask would you then feel neglected and left out. I'm not a bigot just cause I would like to be represented occasionally. And if your read my review I said the film wasn't perfect. Heck show me a film that is. I just remember growing up and wanting just once to see something magical with blacks. If you don't agree with me that's fine. You don't have to get personal with the bigot remark. Wishing you peace to you and yours. Nightmayor.

@nightmayor OH god how did I know some dimwitted bigot would bring race into this, Who the hell cares what color the person skin is in the movie? I swear to god you black people care so damn much about who gets represented in what, the satire in it all is you keep whining about just being part of the pack and being treated the same as everyone. yet you continue to whine if you're "race" isn't the star in the spotlight which is PALPABLY the role that is supposed to be distinguished from everyone else, give me a break and grow up already. As for the movie, I thought it was boring, way to long and the first one overall had much better vibes, and no offense to jaden but I didn't really think he was that good in the movie. I actually thought his mom had the best performance in the entire movie. The only thing good about this film was the fighting but as they stated above that creates a level of unbelievability.
